®Amblers 1 November 2009: Whepstead

After a very wet morning four brave amblers met by the Tithe Barn and set out for Whepstead, parking at the Community Centre, with a few black clouds still hanging around we started off for the church. But like so many these days it was locked so we carried on down the hill to take a footpath around a field with a deep ditch. Crossing it by way of footbridge we climbed uphill to take the path across a muddy field. At the top most members of the group had grown a few inches! By way of a good grass path we made our way around to the Brockley Road and turned down a lane past Tuffield Farm to climb over a stile into a meadow by the side of Manston Hall, a big house with a massive thatched roof and moat. In the meadow there was some old Oak Trees with big girths, some roe deer was spotted in the next field by the ladies but the men were too busy talking to see them. As we went along we kept an eye open for the initial of VB carved into the trees along the way but with no luck. Climbing over a stile out of the meadow a path around a newly set cornfield was followed to Hawks Farm and on the Straight Road. Passing Riches Farm, and the drive of Malting Farm we came to Mickley Green where the sun started to shine between the clouds. Taking a grass path between a hedge and a fence we were back on a field path that went behind The Old Rectory and Hall Farm to cross two stiles of a sheep field and back to the car park.
