®Amblers 7 February 2010: Knettishall We started out on a damp and grey day with 11 amblers, plus 2. The plus 2 consisted of two dogs of quite contrasting natures. One was sociable, a patient and attentive listener, with a convivial canine disposition. The other, one Mungo, was the sort of reprobate who instantly wins your affection by presenting a stick to throw then covering you with mud and the contents of every puddle on your route. We progressed south from the car park on Peddar’s Way at the edge of the heath. In a field to our left there was a number of, semi wild, Exmoor ponies. Apart from this, the heath was quiet and few animals or birds to be seen during the course of the afternoon. The nature of the heath meant that the paths we followed to the east were reasonably well drained and we picked our way past Hut Hill. This is an ancient burial mound, a typical feature of the Brecks, which the county council website claims is over 4,000 year old! We often exchange greetings with individuals and groups who are walking the same paths as our doughty amblage. This afternoon a chance encounter with a former colleague of one of our group introduced us to geocaching! This is defined, at geocaching dot com, as a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. It sounds interesting and I know for a fact that Mungo would have been more than willing to sniff out cached treasure had he not been momentarily distracted by a stick and a puddle. Excitement for man and beast over we headed west along the river to return to our starting point. Val provided a welcome tea when we returned to the village where we planned the coming year’s programme of walks. A rough outline of the walk is available at the Ordnance Survey Explore site (opens in a new window). Thanks to John and Dave for planning the walk. |
